SMAC - Social Mobility Analytics Cloud

SMAC (social, mobile, analytics and cloud) is the concept that four technologies are currently driving business innovation. Every fifteen years or so, the IT industry has witnessed new innovations in computing which have changed the way IT services are delivered to the business and end users. After the mainframe era, mini-computing era, personal computer and client-server era, and the Internet era (or more correctly, the “Web” era), we’re now in what many call the fifth wave of corporate IT. This fifth wave is characterized by a new master IT architecture comprised of social, mobile, analytics and cloud technologies collectively known as SMAC.

SMAC is the new Enterprise IT Model which creates an ecosystem that allows a business to improve its operations and get closer to the customer with minimal overhead and maximum reach.

Social Media has provided businesses with new ways to reach and interact with customers, while Mobile Technologies have changed the way people communicate, shop and work. Analytics allow businesses to understand how, when and where people consume certain goods and services and Cloud Computing provides a new way to access technology and the data a business needs to quickly respond to changing markets and solve business problems. While each of the four technologies can impact a business individually, their convergence is proving to be a disruptive force that is creating entirely new business models for service providers.

Big Data Analytics is relatively early in its adoption cycle. The following opinions from well-known market research and analysis firms elucidate what?s in store for Business Analytics.
”Analytics will define the difference between the losers and winners going forward’’: McKinsey.
”The challenge is that companies have far more data than people have time, and the amount of data that is generated every minute keeps increasing. In the face of accelerating business processes and a myriad of distractions, real -time operational intelligence systems are moving from ‘nice to have’ to ‘must have for survival.’ The more pervasively analytics can be deployed to business users, customers and consumers, the greater the impact will be in real time on business activities, competitiveness, innovation and productivity.” : Gartner.

Cloud Computing

Cloud computing, or something being in the cloud, is an expression used to describe a variety of different types of computing concepts that involve a large number of computers connected through a real-time communication network such as the Internet. In science, cloud computing is a synonym for distributed computing over a network and means the ability to run a program on many connected computers at the same time. The phrase is also more commonly used to refer to network-based services which appear to be provided by real server hardware, which in fact are served up by virtual hardware, simulated by software running on one or more real machines. Such virtual servers do not physically exist and can therefore be moved around and scaled up (or down) on the fly without affecting the end user-arguably, rather like a cloud.
